Piercing Aftercare Guide
Congratulations on Your New Piercing!
You’ve just received a professional body piercing at Piercing Vegas, where we prioritize the highest standards of cleanliness, sterile instruments, and single-use needles. Now, it’s up to you to follow proper aftercare to ensure a smooth and healthy healing process. Here’s everything you need to know to care for your new piercing.
How to Care for Your Piercing
#1 General Cleaning Instructions
- Wash Your Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching or cleaning your piercing.
- Saline Rinse: Use a packaged sterile saline solution without additives to gently rinse the piercing as needed. For some piercings, applying saline with clean gauze may be more convenient.
- Rinse: Carefully rinse the area to remove any leftover cleaning solution. Avoid moving or rotating the jewelry during this process.
- Dry: Pat the area dry with disposable paper products. Avoid cloth towels, as they can carry bacteria and snag on jewelry.
What’s Normal During Healing?
- Initially: You may experience some bleeding, swelling, tenderness, and/or bruising.
- Throughout Healing: Expect mild discoloration, itching, and secretion of a whitish-yellow fluid (not pus) that may crust on the jewelry.
- Once Healed: The jewelry may feel tight and not move freely; don’t force it. Maintain a regular cleaning routine to prevent bodily secretions from accumulating.
- Remember: Piercings may appear healed on the outside before they’re fully healed internally. Be patient and continue with your aftercare routine.
Tip: Even well-established piercings can shrink or close if left empty, so keep your jewelry in if you’d like to maintain the piercing!
Avoid These During Healing
- Harsh Cleaning Products: Avoid using alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and antibacterial soaps like Dial®, as well as ointments that restrict air circulation.
- Products with BZK: Steer clear of Bactine® and similar products that contain Benzalkonium Chloride (BZK), as they can irritate the piercing.
- Over-Cleaning: Excessive cleaning can delay healing and cause irritation.
- Physical Trauma: Avoid friction from clothing, vigorous cleaning, and playing with the jewelry, as these can lead to scarring and prolonged healing.
- Unhygienic Water: Don’t submerge your piercing in pools, lakes, or hot tubs. If needed, cover it with a waterproof wound-sealant bandage like 3M™ Nexcare™ Clean Seals.
- Beauty Products: Avoid cosmetics, lotions, and sprays near the piercing site.
- Hanging Objects: Don’t attach charms or objects to the jewelry until fully healed.
Additional Aftercare for Oral Piercings
- Mouthwash: Use an alcohol-free mouthwash several times a day to keep the area clean.
- Avoid Alcohol: Drinking alcohol can delay healing and increase the chance of irritation.
- Check Jewelry Tightness: Regularly check the beads on your jewelry with clean hands to ensure they remain tight.
- Reduce Swelling: Apply cold soaks to minimize swelling during the first week.
- Eat Carefully: Be mindful while eating—if it hurts, take it slow or choose softer foods.
